Wednesday Tutorial: Flag It

While chevrons, hexagons and banners are hot trends, another trend I see a lot of is flags. Some manufacturers are now producing them, but it is also easy to make them with supplies you already have.

I cut two strips of paper 3/4″ x 2″ (this was for a 4″x5.5″ card; for a layout you may want them to be a little larger).

Fold the strips in half and cut into a banner shape (see this blog post fora tutorial on how to do this)

Put some adhesive on the inside of the flag and wrap around a stick pin or a toothpick.

I decided to layer my flags on top of each other, so used a foam adhesive dot to raise the top flag.

Here is a card on which I placed my flags.

Little Yellow Bicycle Swoon Collection
6×6 Paper Pad
Stick Pins
Cardstock Stickers – Fresh Verse
American Crafts White Cardstock
Quickutz Nesting Lace Circles
American Crafts This to That Adhesive Foam Tab Circles
Sizzix Embossing Folder

Jolene will have a new challenge for you tomorrow!

Tuesday: DIY Picket Fence

Creating your own shapes with the Silhouette can be pretty easy if you know a few tricks. I’ll show you how to combine some simple shapes to create a picket fence.

Before we get started, there’s a few things you’ll need to know how to do:

1. Draw. You’ll need to know how to draw rectangles and circles. To do this you need to click on the appropriate shape in your left hand bank of icons and then click and drag on your workspace to create the shape. You have the option of a rectangle with rounded edges or sharp edges. I used the sharp edges for this project.

2. Weld. You’ll also need to know where the “Modify” button is. It’s in the upper left hand corner of the software. Looks like a grey rectangle intersected by a white circle with a blue “M” inside. This is a really fun button to play with. I’ll walk you through welding some shapes today.

3. Replicate. At the bottom of your screen you’ll find this little button. It replicates whatever you have selected. If you want more advanced replication options, go up to your top left icons and click the button just left of your “Modify” button.

OK! Ready?

Open your software and draw a rectangle–2 in x .33 in. Draw a circle as well. Mine is a little more like an oval. The most important thing is the width of the oval. Make sure it’s the same as the width of the rectangle–.33 in. Line up the oval and the rectangle as shown in the picture below. It should fit perfectly. HINT: For more precision in drawing and lining things up, zoom in.

Now you need to weld these two shapes together. Click “Modify” and then select both of your shapes. Click weld. It should something like this. HINT: There’s a weld short cut at the bottom of your screen. It looks just like the weld shape in the modify menu. Can you find it?

Select this new shape and replicate 3 times. Spread these new shapes out as desired. I used my grid to help me line them up perfect. When you have these few in place, draw a big box around them all to select them all at once and replicate that. Keep it selected and move your newly created set of posts into place. Replicate more as needed to fill your space.

Now draw a narrow rectangle for your fence rails. I just drew one and then replicated it for the second one.

Draw a big box around everything to select all of it and then weld everything together!

New project tomorrow! Come back and check it out.

This past Thursday Celeste challenged us to make a friendship themed project.  She created a gorgeous layout.  You can see her layout and read the rest of the details of the challenge here.   Celeste’s challenge allows for other creations besides layouts.  I decided to create a friendship card.  My card was inspired from a sketch at CPS.   I used Authentique’s Genuine collection.

Supplies:

You have until Wednesday evening to enter your creation for a chance at a $25 gift certificate to the store.

Happy Scrapping!
